By Steve Goldstein WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. portfolios held $5.98 trillion of foreign securities at the end of 2009, up from $4.29 trillion at the end of 2008, according to data released by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Of that amount, $4.0 trillion was held in foreign equity, $1.6 trillion was held in foreign long-term debt securities and $0.4 trillion was held in foreign short-term debt securities. The increase mostly reflects increased valuation of foreign equities. The U.K., Canada and Japan attracted about one-third of the total U.S. portfolio investment.
